We are all well aware of the challenges that Climate Change brings us and how important achieving ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions in schools is.

We look after schools across the Northwest of England and North Wales, and we know our education colleagues have had to make many changes to the way they work. The Pandemic brought some considerable challenges for our schools. They have also had to face the critical challenges of helping to tackle climate change.

The sector is facing some significant changes as governments around the world embrace the challenges of global warming. The 2015 Paris Agreement commits all its signatories to considerable reductions in their carbon emissions with an ultimate net-zero target by 2050. Many Governments, including ours, are more ambitious than that, and some have 2030 as a target, with others targeting being carbon negative by 2040!

Our schools are working hard to reduce their carbon emissions and their overall environmental impact, something which many Parents, Teachers, and Students are passionate about.
As a leading supplier of cleaning and caretaking services, we have been working hard with our schools and helping them meet their targets.

Our Accreditations – the Nirvana way

We are accredited to ISO 14001. This is an ISO standard that covers environmental management systems. It is a management tool that helps identify and control the impact of our activities, products and services on the environment.

Our drive to ‘Net Zero’ -the Nirvana way

We recognize that being ISO 14001 accredited is just the foundation of a broader drive to tackle climate change. Getting accredited made us think long and hard about how we operate now and how we will operate in the future.

We are genuinely committed to achieving ‘Net Zero’ and becoming a Carbon Neutral business.

For example, we operate a small fleet of diesel vehicles, with some of the fleet covering over 160 miles per day. We are now investing in replacing all our vans with new electric-powered replacements. This has meant lots of time spent evaluating the right options so we can operate efficiently and effectively. There are many varieties and vehicle choices, and we needed to make sure we had access to both rapid and overnight chargers. Electric vehicles are more expensive to purchase; however, running and maintenance costs are much lower than traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

We’ve ordered our first electric van, a Renault Kangoo, and the rest ( Renault Kangoos and Renault Zoe’s ) will be delivered in the Summer.

Our next phase is a more efficient journey planning process using staff who are more local to each work location.

We intend to use electric bikes to reduce our footprint and business costs even more in some areas.

We have now started to research sourcing all our cleaning chemicals and replacing-ing what we use now with sustainable, ethical and environmentally friendly products.

We anticipate we will have completed this process by the end of the year.

We won’t rest on our laurels and will continue to focus on a carbon-neutral future, and ultimately we aim to be accredited as ‘Zero Carbon’.
